Kake City School District is sharing an important update regarding our high school volleyball program. After reviewing the eligibility requirements, we have determined that the team will not attend the state tournament this year. This decision was made with careful thought, and we recognize it is disappointing for many of our students and families.
Participation in athletics requires students to meet district expectations that support both their academic success and their growth as teammates. These expectations are in place across all KCSD sports to help student-athletes stay on track in the classroom while representing our school with pride.
While eligibility played a role in this outcome, it is important to emphasize that successful athletic programs depend on full-team accountability. It does not matter how many students met eligibility requirements or how many did not. A team functions as a whole, and teammates must uphold expectations together, encourage one another, and ensure everyone is meeting academic responsibilities from the start of the season to the end. Supporting one another on and off the court is essential to the strength and success of any team.
We want to extend our sincere appreciation to the two coaches who supported our volleyball program this season. Their leadership, encouragement, and commitment to our students were evident every step of the way, and we are grateful for the time and energy they invested in our athletes. We also want to thank all KCSD coaches who volunteer their time and dedication throughout the year. Their ongoing support makes a tremendous difference in the lives of our students, both on and off the court.
As a district, we are committed to learning from this moment. I speak for our teachers and administrators when I say we will reflect on how we can better support our students academically and ensure strong systems are in place to help student-athletes uphold expectations. We will continue working to strengthen the academic foundation and accountability structures that support all of our programs' thriving.
Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of our students. We remain committed to providing opportunities that reflect the pride, integrity, and values of Kake City School District.

Effective immediately, the Junior High basketball season is cancelled for both the boys and girls teams. This decision was not made lightly. After reviewing ongoing academic and behavioral concerns, the boys’ coach and district administration agreed that the program cannot continue at this time. While the girls’ coach was unavailable for comment, the expectations for all student-athletes remain the same across our district, and we must ensure those standards are upheld.
In recent days, it has become clear that our academic and behavior expectations were not consistently met during team travel and regular school days. Participation in athletics is a privilege that depends on students meeting classroom responsibilities, representing our school with integrity, and demonstrating conduct aligned with district values. At this time, we cannot in good conscience continue the season without addressing these concerns directly.
We understand this decision may be disappointing for many students and families. Our priority is ensuring that academics come first and that student-athletes meet the expectations that allow our programs to thrive. In the coming weeks, we will be reviewing our policies, reinforcing expectations with students, and planning supports to help them refocus academically and behaviorally.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our students. We are committed to rebuilding a program that reflects the pride and standards of Kake City School District.

We want families to know that our goal is to give students confidence and a sense of preparedness. Teachers will guide the process in a calm, supportive way so that students understand this is just a practice, much like a fire drill.
Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to keep our school a safe and welcoming place for all students.

***Cross Country Travel***
We have just learned from the Alaska Marine Highway that the ferry carrying our students from Hoonah has been diverted to Juneau. The vessel is being brought in by tugboat and is expected to arrive in Juneau by mid-morning.
This is the most current information available to us at this time. We understand families’ concern and the need to call Robin Ross and Anthony Ross, but please know we are working diligently to make sure all student needs are being met. They are working hard to respond to each of you.
We will continue to post updates here on Facebook as soon as we receive new information. Thank you for your patience and support.
