On March 18, 2026 the Kake City School Board voted to formally submit a letter of support regarding the Federal Subsistence Management Program review.

We know that for our students, subsistence is more than just a food sourceit is a classroom without walls where they learn culture, responsibility, and a deep connection to our land.

Why this matters: The Board’s letter advocates for maintaining the rural subsistence priority and ensuring that local voices, like those here in Kake, continue to have a seat at the table when decisions are made about our traditional resources. We want to ensure that our future generations have the same access to fish, deer, and shellfish that have sustained our community for centuries.

Your voice matters, too! Public comments from individuals and families are a powerful way to show the federal government how important these programs are to our daily lives. If you would like to share your own perspective or stories about how subsistence supports your family and our youth, the Office of Subsistence Management is currently accepting comments.

Working together, we can ensure our students grow up with a secure and vibrant connection to their heritage.
